Meanwhile, the vast land to which the structures were later to be built, the exact location where Sacred Heart College is today was acquired by Very Rev. Fr. Richard John Enegbuma in 1985, the then Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish. The process of acquiring and securing this land involved so much ruggedity and doggedness. There was a huge physical and the use of pen struggle with encroachers which culminated in a legal battle. With forthrightness and a strong will power, Fr. Richard John Enegbuma walled round the entire vast land in 1986 with some coaches. All these came to rest when the land was on the long run left alone for the Church. Kudos to Very Rev. Fr. R.J. Enegbuma. The College took off on the 14th September, 1998 with offer of admission to deserving pioneer students numbering seventy (70), in a temporary two classrooms offered by Fr. Piotin Memorial Nursery/Primary School, Agenebode. The under listed staff were present on the first day of resumption, Rev. Fr. Isaac Bossey (Founder/Administrator), Mr. Paul Imelo and Mr. Alex Adomagbo who both served as part-time teachers. To set in place the why the college was founded, that is to provide an all-inclusive education, the founder deliberately chose the motto ” Discipline, Dedication and Devotion” for the college. To assist in the initial activities of the college so as to achieve its aims, an Education Committee that has its members as professionals was set up. The members included the following some of whom have died Late Chief V.D. Alokha (Chairman) Mr. (Now Sir) Peter Odiaka (Secretary), Late Chief Martin Umole (Member), Chief J.C. Okhakhu (member), Alhaji Chief S.A. Okponobi (member), Mrs P.E. Onwude (member), Rev. Sr. Francisca Duru (member), Late Chief Francis Ogbobeta (member), Mr. Idinye (member), Mr. Pius Agiamoh (member), Late Chief (Sir) P.A. Dakpokpo (member), Late Mr. Peter Aliu (member), Mr. Osi Imomoh (member), Late Mr. M.A. Imoesi (member) and Mr. Duke Oshioke. On the 7th of June 1999, the college received Official Approval from the Ministry of Education, Benin City for its operation. Having crossed this hurdle, there became the need to have a Board of Governors whose members would be financially capable to assist in the infrastructural development of the college. A thirteen (13) member Board of Governors was thereafter set up and were officially inaugurated on the 15″ day of April in the year, 1999. This body included the following who eventually proved themselves selfless philanthropists: Late Sir (Dr) Gabriel Eshemokhai (KSM) (Chairman), Mrs. Carol Obozuwa (Secretary), Mr. Steven Bossey (Member), Mr. Emmanuel Imoagene (Member), Late Alhaji S.A. Okponobi (Member), Dr. Marcel Okhakhu (now Prof.) (Member), Late Chief (Mrs) Henrietta Vanni (Member), Mr. Osi Imomoh (Member), Late Sir Victor Uwaifor (now Prof.) (Member), Major (Chief) Sir F.A. Alimhikhena (Member), Sir (Engr.) Egbert Imomoh (Member), Late Chief V.D. Alokha (Member) and Rev. Sr. Perpetual (SND) (Member). The thinking of the founder in putting in place the board of governors paid off, as the college hall complex containing offices for the principal, secretary and the bursar was initiated. The board also laid a foundation and completed the vice principal’s office, college library, science laboratory, staffrooms and computer laboratory respectively. To allow him have more time for his pastoral duties, the founder stepped aside to allow a full time principal for the school while he focused more on the administrative aspect of the college. With the creation and canonical erection of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, a more stable administrative structure of all the Catholic Schools was set in place.

The Catholic Bishop. Most Revd. Gabriel Dunia rightly becomes the Proprietor of the college same as all the catholic schools within the diocese. The Bishop also graciously set up the Catholic Education Board to oversee all educational matters in the diocese.

Hence, the college administrative organs of the college became structured thus; the Diocesan Bishop as the proprietor, Diocesan Education Board and the college administrator/principal. These in their different capacities and competencies see to the development of the college, the appointment of teachers, the welfare of staff, and the day to day supervision of the college activities.

The College Administrators/Principals in their turns have doggedly worked and continue to work for the developments of the college in all strides.

At twenty-five (25), it is visible that Sacred Heart was made from a foundation, a strong foundation that holds and continues to contribute to the success of humanity. The idea of the founder did not only come to fruition, today we can say without any fear or contradiction that his thinking then has given birth to a new crop of students who have held their heads high in all areas of human endeavors. At twenty-five, many old ages had passed and tones of people have been moulded that are now interacting with different professions in our society, changes occur, and as it happens, our school is still standing strong in molding lives for the society and the world, from coeval to coevals.

Many had seen how Sacred Heart College. Agenebode grows and competes with other schools within and outside its locality, both in WAEC and NECO as well as BECE. The internal exams are also means students demonstrate their intelligence with intellectual fight among classmates. The grades have always been intimidating.

The college from time to time organizes quizzes, article writing and debate contests for students and sometimes against other schools as part of intellectual extra-curricular activities.

Worthy of mention here are Pearls competition, Cowbell Mathematics quiz, LAPO quiz competition, Catholic Diocesan competition, Senior High Chief Barr. Mike Ozekhomhe’s Annual Bursary Competition, Kenneth Omasuagbon Essay Contest and many others.

The college has grown in leaps and bounds, in the area of sports, the college has made its mark. The planners of the premises in their wisdom made provision for enough playgrounds. Hence all games are catered for. No wonder our students are always looked out for by other schools at invitational relays and football matches. Mention must be made of Master Anthony Itseuwa of the 2018 set who became a record holder in sprints in Edo State and was acclaimed as the fastest school boy in the State. The sporting activities of the college also help to boost the health life of the students. Meanwhile, giving the peculiar nature of the locality of where the college is, being closed to the Niger River and by extension prone to malaria because of the prevalent of mosquitoes, the college, in recent time, has provided for a Sick Bay with a certified permanent nurse who keenly attend to the health of the students and make a referral to the Catholic Hospital close-by when the attention of a doctor is required.

As a Catholic institution all activities are punctuated with the injection of Catholic ethos, for example, before each class, students are made to recite a short prayer, “Come 0 Holy Spirit enlighten and sanctify us…” Same goes for all other activities in the school. Each morning the boarders start their activities with the sacrifice of the Holy Mass.

This in effect makes the students to have the fear of God and His presence always which they need at this level of their development.

Much of other spiritual activities are also infused into the school’s horarium, such as evening recitation of the Rosary, recitation of the Angelus appropriately, Sunday evening exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction, Breviary prayers of Lauds/Vespers on Sundays, Songs Vespers/Incense Psalms on last Saturday of the month, Stations of the Cross during Lenten season, society devotional prayers (Legion of Mary, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Devotees to the Divine Mercy) and lots others. This structure makes the College a Small Community of Believers.,

To create an avenue for an all-round formation, the social/cultural life of the students is not neglected. Apart from the formation in the chapel, classrooms and in the field of play, the college also groom the students in their social/cultural formation. Like a mother she nurtures her children. At different times, there is graduation ceremony of out-going students which is always celebrated as social festival. The Feast Day of the College is a day set aside for Cultural Day of the college wherein dramas, dances and other exhibition of our different cultures are displayed. There is the inaugural party for fresher’s every year to incorporate them into the social life of the college. There is the social nights and Easter parties where the hall is always lighted with beautiful Easter colour sand fantastic presentations by the students. Going through Sacred Heart College akins to having a holistic formation.

From a humble beginning of just a block of classroom for threw classes and renovated buildings as dormitories for boys and girls, the school is now having modern edifices for boys and girls.

There are building housing the auditorium and the principal’s office, another complex housing the library, laboratory and the staffrooms, and above all a modern rectory for the priests. There are other amenities like the borehole and generators for use to combat the almost-not-available public lighting system in this locality.

The college has always been blessed with priests who have the zeal for good qualitative education, as head. The school’s population increases by every session with students from Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Lokoja, Lagos, Warri, Asaba, Calabar, Benin and of course, from within Edo North Senatorial District.

The staff strength has always remained formidably stable with focus on making the best out of the students. Indeed, the staff members remain able and capable, qualified and certified to meet the academic demands by all standards. And the mission to secure, build and establish a conducive teaching and learning environment where our future leaders could be educated and be trained according to the mind of God, that they may be good ambassadors of God and good citizens of this nation has always remained the focus.

At twenty-five, the college has actually moved on and this would not have been possible without the help of our benefactors and benefactresses.
